Dear Performers,
It has always been my desire to showcase Middle Eastern Dance in a professional, fusion venue. It has also been my wish to allow the general public, who may have stereo typed belly dance, an opportunity to experience it as a creative and exciting art form with many individual interpretations. Within this same venue, I feel the traditional and ethnic should be celebrated as well.
In January, "Journey through Middle Eastern Dance" was an inspiring presentation that showcased the creativity and personal expression of our dance community. With your help, I would love to develop the show into an annual event that will challenge all of us to continue to raise our inspirational bar.
The "Belly dance Superstars" show is certainly achieving that type of inspiration. Can our individual communities also do this? Are we up to the challenge? I think we are! I would also like to go one step further and continue to demonstrate how the tribal, fusion and Middle Eastern dance artists can use their talents to contribute to the community.
In January, 2009, at the Saville Theater, I would like to present, "Once Upon a Belly dance" A Collection of Short Stories told through fusion, tribal and traditional Middle Eastern dance. It can be a fairy tale, a depiction of history, a fantasy, or tackle social situations, ECT. I would also like to donate on behalf of our dance community all funds raised from this show to the Outreach Programs. I am personally involved with the program as a fitness instructor for pregnant teens from the Twain high school. Some of the girls are only 14 years old. I have been very touched by their appreciation of the program, one of so many programs that Outreach supports. I am also privileged to see many of the inner city elementary school children learn salsa and core values through lessons with Leo Francisco. Leo continues to impress me with the warmth he projects to the children and their obvious joy at being there.
If you would like to participate in creating this future event, the following is a list of opportunities available:
